4…3…2…?? Big Bang Theory Has it All Down to a Science

Perhaps it’s because I’m OCD, or because I had to pay special attention to the wardrobe I wore in a particular film I appeared in, but I’m intrigued by the clothing worn by the four main male characters from the CBS television show “The Big Bang Theory.”

Each of the four main characters appear primarily in a specific number of shirt layers. Let’s call it the “Formula for Geek  Chic”.

Raj Koothrappali , played by actor  of Kunnal Nayyar, always wears 4 layers:

  1. An undershirt/t-shirt…
  2. A button-down shirt…
  3. A sweater/vest…
  4. And a  jacket.

Leonard Hofstadter, portrayed by actor Johnny Galecki, always wears 3 layers:

  2. A hoodie…
  3. And a jacket.

Sheldon Cooper, played by Jim Parsons, always wears 2 layers:

  1. A short-sleeved t-shirt (that always has a science-y or scifi graphic on the front)…
  2. And a long-sleeved t-shirt.

Simon Helberg’s Howard Wolowitz wears….

  2. And…

Did you guess 2 items of clothing? Well, you’d have guessed incorrectly, because Howard does not wear turtlenecks, he wears Dickies, which are not a full article of clothing. Rather, a Dickie is a “fake shirt” that is worn around the neck to give the illusion of an under layer. So Wolowitz wears 1 shirt.

It’s like they’re following a scientific formula – exact, predictable, never changing. The few deviations occur when there’s a very special occasion, like Howard and Bernadette’s wedding (unless that tuxedo shirt is a dickie, I don’t recall) .

Kudos to whomever dreamed up the details to dressing the characters, and to them and the rest of the crew and the cast, thanks for leaving us in stitches.
